Are AirTags the Right Choice for Your Pet? A Rural Perspective

Published on 9 January 2025 at 14:00

With the rise of wearable tech for pets, Apple AirTags have quickly gained attention as a simple and affordable way to keep tabs on our furry friends. While these tiny trackers can be a lifesaver in urban areas teeming with Apple devices, their utility diminishes significantly in rural settings. In this blog, we’ll explore the limitations of AirTags for countryside pet owners, share a compelling real-life story about a rural escape, and suggest better alternatives for those living in areas with fewer people—and fewer smartphones.

The Technology Behind AirTags

Apple AirTags are not traditional GPS trackers. Instead, they use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to connect with nearby Apple devices, leveraging the Find My network to update their location. If an AirTag comes into range of an iPhone or other Apple device, its location is relayed anonymously to the owner's Find My app.

This system is brilliant in densely populated areas like towns or cities, where Apple devices abound. However, it quickly encounters problems in rural settings with sparse populations.

Why AirTags Fall Short in Rural Areas

  1. Dependence on Nearby Apple Devices
In rural locations, fewer people—and by extension, fewer Apple devices—mean that the AirTag's location may not update for long periods. If your dog wanders into a field or forest without any iPhones nearby, the AirTag is essentially “off the grid.”
  2. No Direct GPS Capability
Unlike GPS-enabled pet trackers, AirTags can’t connect to satellites. They rely entirely on their ability to piggyback on nearby Apple devices, making them less effective in remote areas.
  3. Delayed Tracking
Even if your dog eventually moves into an area with Apple devices, the delay in locating their updated position could be critical in an emergency.
  4. Limited Range
The Bluetooth signal of an AirTag can only reach a maximum of about 100 metres in ideal conditions. In open countryside, this range is unlikely to be sufficient to find a wandering pet without a nearby device to amplify the signal.

The Reality of Rural Escapes: A Vizsla’s Adventure

Recently, a Hungarian Vizsla went walkabout in the rural community near Cirencester in the Cotswolds. I follow various lost dog networks, and this handsome fella’s escapade made waves online as the call went out to find him.

The urgency of the search couldn’t be overstated. The area where he went missing is bisected by the extremely busy A417 dual carriageway. Volunteer drone pilots were summoned via Drone SAR and joined farmers, local shoots, and beaters in the search. To make matters worse, the winter weather turned severe, with snow, ice, and bitter cold complicating efforts.

At first, sightings came in regularly. Being a young Vizsla in the prime of his life, he was fast and tireless, soon covering over seven miles from home. As the sun dipped below the icy Cotswold hills, sightings petered out. Drones equipped with thermal cameras scoured the landscape through the night but to no avail.

Morning broke, and all was quiet—until he was spotted hightailing it along a frozen river. He was heading home! Sure enough, he came full circle, arriving home filthy, exhausted, and with split pads, but alive and safe. His owner was ecstatic, and the community’s relief was heartfelt.

This true story had a happier-than-most outcome. However, it does make me wonder (without judgement): why aren’t owners more proactive in fitting dependable trackers to their dogs’ collars, particularly for breeds with the stamina and speed to outpace a 4x4 across the countryside?

A Better Alternative: GPS Trackers for Rural Pets

For countryside pet owners, GPS-enabled trackers provide a more reliable solution. Unlike AirTags, these devices communicate directly with satellites and mobile networks, offering real-time tracking in almost any location.

Recommended GPS Trackers:

  1. Tractive GPS Dog Tracker: Reliable live tracking and geofencing capabilities.
  2. Whistle GO Explore: Tracks location and provides health insights.
  3. Garmin Alpha 200i: Rugged and ideal for pets exploring wilderness areas.

While these trackers may require a subscription fee, they provide accurate and consistent tracking, regardless of how remote your pet’s adventures may be.

AirTags: Best for Urban Pets

Despite their shortcomings in rural settings, AirTags do have their place in pet care. For owners living in cities or towns, AirTags are a cost-effective option. In urban areas, the high density of Apple devices ensures frequent location updates, making it easier to locate a missing pet quickly.

  • Urban Case Study:
Emma, a London-based dog owner, attached an AirTag to her spaniel, Bella. When Bella bolted during a walk in Hyde Park, Emma used her Find My app to locate her within minutes. Bella was safely retrieved near a nearby café, thanks to the swarm of Apple devices in the area.

For rural dwellers, however, this level of connectivity simply isn’t available.

Choose Wisely Based on Your Location

While Apple AirTags offer an inexpensive and user-friendly solution for pet tracking, they are far better suited to urban environments where Apple devices are abundant. For pet owners in rural areas, GPS-enabled collars are the gold standard, providing reliable tracking no matter how far your pet roams.
