A Tale of Two Tails – Looking After Two Great Labradors in the Autumn Woods

Published on 1 December 2024 at 10:00

As the leaves crunch beneath our boots and paws, and the golden hues of autumn frame the footpath, there's a sense of tranquillity and purpose that accompanies a walk in the countryside with dogs. This week, I’ve had the pleasure of caring for Spark, a dignified Labrador of 10 years, and his pup, Ember, a sprightly 8-month-old pup with endless curiosity.

A Dynamic Duo

Spark, with his wise, watchful eyes, is the epitome of an experienced companion. He's steady and thoughtful on the lead, always glancing back to ensure all is well. Ember, on the other hand, is a ball of boundless energy, his every move a celebration of discovery. Together, they create the perfect balance – Spark, the gentle mentor, and Ember, the eager apprentice.

Walking with these two is no task; it’s an adventure. For Spark, the journey is one of familiarity and nostalgia, while Ember turns every leaf pile into a potential treasure chest. Their differing perspectives remind me why every dog’s needs and routines matter – something I always take into consideration as a house and pet sitter.

Routine and Adaptability: The Key to Happy Pets

Spark thrives on routine, and maintaining his schedule is as important as ensuring Ember gets his dose of exploration and training. Feeding times, walk schedules, and even how they’re asked to sit before meals are all part of keeping their world predictable and comforting. For Ember, these routines are shaping him into a well-behaved adult, and Spark sets a brilliant example (mostly).

Whether it’s a familiar route through the woods or adding enrichment with hide-and-seek games (Ember’s current favourite), every activity is tailored to their personalities. It’s amazing to see Spark’s patience with Ember who’s youthful enthusiasm keeps Spark feeling young at heart too.

Staying Engaged

Autumn walks are full of sensory delights for dogs. The scent of fallen leaves, the trickle of run-off from autumn storms, and even the wind shaking rain drops onto their heads adds variety to their days. It’s these simple pleasures that make the daily walks so much more than just exercise – it’s a chance to bond. Spark appreciates a slower pace, until he picks up the scent of other dogs, otherwise he’s happy hanging back with me, while Ember gallops around on his own mini adventures.

Keeping both dogs happy during our time together means finding the balance between routine and engagement. For Ember, we practice commands like “stay” and “seek” on our walks, while Spark is happy enough to just bury his old nose in the shrubbery and soak up the scents. Naturally, treats and praise are always on hand to reinforce good behaviour and create positive associations – for Ember, that’s motivation, and for Spark, it’s a well-earned reward.

The Joy of Caring for Pets in the Countryside

There’s something special about housesitting in the beautiful English countryside, especially when charged with caring for good boys like Spark and Ember. The still morning fog hanging between the trees, the glow of an autumn sunset, and the wagging tails beside me create a sense of peace that’s hard to replicate. For us, every sit is a reminder of how unique each pet is, with their individual quirks, preferences, and characters.

When I return home with these two labs, their tails wagging and tongues lolling, I know they’ve had an enriching walk. And that’s what it’s all about – ensuring they remain happy, healthy, and secure while their owners are away.

If you're planning a getaway and want your pets to experience the same level of care, why not consider a professional house and pet sitter? From maintaining routines to tailoring adventures, there’s no better way to ensure your four-legged companions thrive in your absence. After all, a happy pet makes for a guilt-free holiday.
